Developing an engaging video game is a delicate and complex endeavor. With thousands of games and apps in the market, standing apart from the crowd is increasingly challenging, even for AAA studios with considerable resources. This situation has ramifications for how educational games can be made both attractive to their audience and likely to induce transfer from game play to real world behaviors. This talk will provide an overview of user experience (UX) practices - increasingly used for commercial games - and why these practices should be considered when designing educational games.
